Matthew Lee - The Wadebridge Ironman

Matt is from Wadebridge in Cornwall. He's a committed and talented athlete who takes competing very seriously.

I travelled down from Manchester early on a Saturday morning, to accompany Matt as he trained and take some promotional images, in some fantastic locations in Cornwall, prior to his next competition.

In September this year Matt travels to Nelson Mandela Bay, Port Elizabeth, South Africa to compete in The Ironman 70.3 Triathlon World Championships.

Matt is one of more than 130,000 athletes who have participated in a season of qualifying races for the World Championship, a series which consists of over 100 events in worldwide locations.

In preparation for the event Matt has had lots of early morning sea swims, coastal path runs and cycled nearly 9,000 miles

Participants will range in age from 18 to 75, and will represent over 70 countries. Consisting of a 1.2 mile swim [1.9km], a 56 mile bike ride [90km] and finally a 13.1 mile run [21.1km]

The triathlon will finish on a high with 50,000-plus spectators cheering the competitors home. lets just hope that the Orcas and Sharks don't delay his swim.

Why the picture of a dog you may ask. As Matt was training in the sea Harlyn Bay, I clocked 'Gus' who was having a fun day on the beach, so I sneaked a couple of photos as he ran in and out of the sea! Perhaps we should have an Irondog event?

Good luck Matt. Have a safe journey and make Cornwall and GB proud!
